Gruene Hall and the businesses around it
Gruene Hall was built in 1878 and is known as the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas. Pat Molak bought the shuttered hall in 1975 and kept it the way it was instead of modernizing it. Artists like George Strait, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson have played there.
Molak's company, now called Momentous Concepts, also runs several of Gruene's best-known spots. The Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar opened in 1977 in a restored 1878 cotton gin on a bluff above the Guadalupe. Cantina del Rio sits by the river near the hall, Mozie's is across the street, and The Grapevine is a wine bar with live music most weekends. The H.D. Gruene Mercantile, first opened in 1904 as the town's commercial center, reopened as a retail shop in 2026.
